8 Hair Mistakes We Bet You’ve Made In Your 20s

Whether you’re just out of your teens or are slowly inching towards your thirties–your twenties are a definitive decade. Experimenting with different trends, setting a skincare routine in place, and finding yourself–this is the time you come into your own. You also tend to party a lot more–with plenty of late nights, coupled with alcohol and unhealthy eating choices (hey, it doesn’t hurt that your metabolism is super fast). When it comes to your mane, though, there are plenty of sins you commit that will probably ruin your hair for the rest of your life.

Straightening the life out of your strands 

Poker-straight locks are still the go-to hairstyle when you want something low maintenance. But aside from frequent ironing and subsequent heat damage, going overboard with chemicals in the name of ‘rebonding’ not only tends to make locks look flat; but also cause makes strands brittle and weak.

The solution? Straighten no more than twice a week, using a ceramic plated straightener and limit your ironing to once or twice.

Washing your hair every day

Even if your shampoo claims to be all natural, sulfate-free, yadda yadda–you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. Washing mane daily will strip your hair of its natural oils, and leave it dry. Opt for dry shampoo, if you can’t deal with a greasy or itchy scalp. If you’re looking for a natural option, use baby powder or cornstarch.

Sleeping with wet hair

Repeat after us: your hair is weakest when wet. Yup, so if you don’t dry your hair properly, sleeping with wet hair will cause strands to break and damage the hair follicle. Not to mention, the friction between your mane and the pillow is also going to cause frizz. Instead, pick a microfibre towel or an old towel that absorbs more water than an ordinary towel. Which takes us to our next point…

Combing your hair when wet

Sure brushing wet hair seems more manageable, but it actually intense breakage. So use a detangling comb when your hair is damp (not dripping wet) to get rid of knots.

Not using a hair protecting spray

Blow-drying, frequent ironing, and using the curling iron damages your hair. Big surprise! To help minimize damage, spray a heat protectant mist on your mane that acts like a barrier between the hot tool and your mane.

Wearing the same hairstyle

We’re all guilty of wearing our hair the same style all through the week–after all we’re creatures of habit. But sporting the same tight ponytail or bun, can be super damaging thanks to traction. Tight hairstyles, especially, when done on the regular can cause balding. So loosen up your ponytail, sport a plait girls!

Frequently colouring your hair

Rainbow hair, dip dye, and more – it looks so good on the ‘gram. But when it comes to your hair shaft, it’s going to take a toll. Bleaching your hair to load those crazy colours strips your hair of all nourishment. So avoid colouring regularly, and when you do–follow up with a colour protect shampoo and mask. Also invest in treatments like Olaplex to restore your hair’s strength.

Poor diet

Yes, this a big factor too! From munching on too much chips and not incorporating enough leafy veggies into your diet–bad eating habits can lead to bad hair. So go green, and eat amla–as it is a great source of vitamin C, and also provides iron and calcium which benefit your mane.
