When it comes to makeup, the so-called basics are often the most difficult to get right. Whether it’s matching your foundation or picking a flattering lipstick, it all comes down to one thing: your undertones. Instead of spending hours with the mall makeup counter girls, here are five quick tips to help you figure out your colors once and for all.

5 Easy Ways to Determine Your Skin’s True Undertones

1. What clothing colors do you wear most?

If you look best in various shades of blue and purple, it’s because those colors are picking up your cool undertones. If you tend to favor reds, oranges or pinks, you’re most likely warm-toned. Simple as that.

2. How do you look in white?

When you put on a plain white top, does it make your skin look brighter? Or does it wash you out completely? If it’s the latter, you’re cool-toned (and would probably fare better in an off-white beige). If you look good in any color, you’re a) lucky and b) neutral-toned.

3. What kinds of jewelry do you find yourself picking up the most?

If you gravitate toward gold and bronze, you have warm undertones. If silver is more your thing, you’re cool-toned. If you look good in both, you’re neutral.

4. Do you tan or burn in the sun?

If you tan easily, you’re warm-toned. If you burn quickly, you’re cool-toned. (Either way, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen!)

5. What color are your eyes and hair?

If you have green or blue eyes with blonde or brown hair, you’re most likely cool-toned. If you have brown or hazel eyes with red or brown hair, you’re probably warm-toned. And if your hair color is (ahem) enhanced, think about the key words of your shade: “Ashy” or “platinum” indicates cooler tones; whereas “golden” or “mahogany” means they are warm.
