Karishma graduated from SNDT Polytechnic College in 2003 with a diploma in fashion designing and has worked under some of the biggest names in the fashion industry including Aki Narula, Hemant Trivedi and Manish Malhotra.
She received plenty of accolades on completing her graduation as well. In 2010, she launched her own fashion label- Lotus Sutr which helps her fulfill her passion for art through fabric. She describes it as a conduit for manifesting her myriad thoughts. She made her debut in the Lakme Fashion Week this year in April 2013 where she showcased her collection ‘And I still haven’t found’, which derived its inspiration from the rawness and unfinished nature of an artist’s canvas.
About the Collection : Between Smudged Lines
Having always had a penchant for art, Karishma is of the opinion that one of the best forms of its interpretation is through the the various textures and patterns of fabric. Her latest collection “Between Smudged Lines” which will be unveiled at the Lakme Fashion Week Winter Festive 2013, has an urban bohemian look drawing inspiration from urban art paintings. The collection makes use of urban themes including graffiti, old Indian water colours and geometric patterns all fused into a vibrant and earthy gamut of colours.
Drapes are a more or less ubiquitous feature of this collection. The colour palette makes use of warm hues like orange and yellow as well as complementing calm colours like blue and sea green. Right from jackets to togas, this collection has been designed keeping in mind the weather experienced during Mumbai winters.Speaking about the collection, Karishma says that it would appeal to the younger generation as well as the more mature middle aged women, anyone who can appreciate the magic art can create on fabric.
