The delicateness, elegance and asymmetry of the 18th century artistic movement of Rococo, finds a contemporary manifestation in Delhi-based fashion designer Mandira Wirk’s Amazon India Fashion Week 2016 collection ‘Romancing Rococo’.
The collection delves deep into this style that gained prominence in Paris as a statement in fancifulness, modishness and refined style. The collection particularly takes a cue from the curlicues motifs and gilding of the iconic era and finds a modern-day expression in Wirk’s decidedly trans-seasonal collection.
“The Rococo movement emerged as a rebellion against the rigidity of Baroque designs and its hallmark was a quiet grandeur that was far from opulent or overbearing. My collection captures this exact sentiment and strives to bring forth elegance that is, at no point, over the top or gimmicky,” states Wirk.
The intricacy of designs in the Rococo movement’s art and architecture as well as the elaborate curves and meticulous grid work serve as the prime source of inspiration for this collection. They are brought to life through the medium of intricate and florid thread work, which are restricted to a tone-on-tone palette to keep it sophisticated yet subdued.
The collection also gives the fluidity of thought that characterised the Rococo movement, through its diaphanous drapes. The focus on versatile silhouettes, lightweight fabrics, flattering cuts and generous layering is immense. From constructed jackets and panelled palazzos to layered ‘Anarkalis’; easy and wearable separates are the highlight of this entire collection.
The sari 2.0 is the hero silhouette of this collection—unconventionally pre-draped nine-yards that boast a feminine appeal and contemporary edge promise to resonate with the fashion conscious millennial of today. Wirk’s entire collection has been created in a palette of ivory and gold, black and beige as well as tones such as grey, maroon, pink, blue and red.
Soft ombre ensembles make an appearance as well, and bling is conspicuous by its absence. Instead, attention to detailing is highlighted by way of painstakingly gilded embroidery. The statement backs also make an impact—think bold cut-outs as well as an interplay between sheer and opaque fabrics.
“My collection has a definite sensual undertone but at not point, does it venture into an overdramatic territory. Timeless, soft and understated are the keywords that would sum up this line,” Wirk signs off.
