A new year calls for new beginnings, and yes, that does not exclude fashion and beauty. While there were quite a lot of quirky, eclectic trends that struck a chord with us in 2015, there are a few trends that we would gladly say goodbye to in 2016. From being downright kitschy, to just plain boring – here are five fashion trends that we hope will fade out this year.
The Naked Dress
The whole purpose of wearing clothes is to not be naked. Yet here we are, looking at a slew of bold celebrities who dared to don this gallant product of ever-changing fashion. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Beyonce made a strong case for naked dresses at The 2015 Met Gala. While we’d give credit to Jennifer Lopez for successfully carrying off the barely-there gown, the latter two failed to impress us. But, while the Naked Dress leaves very little to the imagination, we would give credit to singer Rita Ora and supermodel Irina Shayk for carrying off two stunning numbers of this kind at the Vanity Fair Oscars After Party with élan.
Scarves can upgrade almost any outfit from plain Jane to downright chic. But when you step out wearing a queen-sized scarf that’s enough to keep an entire homeless shelter warm, you’re sure to draw attention for all the wrong reasons. If keeping warm was your intention, we’d have you know that a smaller scarf does the trick just fine, because looking like a human duvet is anything but fashionable.
Were we into lips that looked like a whole honeycomb has latched onto your mouth, we’d be thanking Kylie Jenner for this trend. But we’re not. Lining your lips way beyond their natural lip line looks anything but sexy, and in most cases, it just ends up looking shabby and clownish. Thinner lips are a source of insecurity for a lot of women and, if you must have a fuller, more plump pout, there are a bunch of ways in which you can attain those results. Try scrubbing your lips with a toothbrush for two minutes or simply invest in lip products with peppermint in them, which have a plumping effect on your lips.
Okay, so we’re not denying it’s utility, but bucket bags need to go out of fashion for good reason. Firstly, bucket bags are the reason why you end up procrastinating because cleaning out multiple candy wrappers, paper-balled chewing gum and a bunch of other unsanitary items is a huge task. Not to mention, you will end up with shoulders that feel like they just carried a sack full of boulders because bucket bags are good for throwing in almost anything. Secondly, bucket bags are far from the fashionable carriers that they are presumed to be. Women on the heavier side are more likely to draw attention to their waist due to the large size of these bags. Women on the smaller side also end up throwing their overall look off balance due to the amount of attention these bucket bags draw. So, if you need a bag that looks fashionable and has great storage space, try going in for a tote that has multiple compartments.
There are two things that come into play when we talk about eyebrows – thickness and sharpness. While we simply adore Cara Delevingne’s fuller, thicker eyebrows, we hate to admit that they only look good on her. Yes, some women are blessed with lusciously thick eyebrows, but for those who aren’t, it’s okay not to get carried away while filling them in. The idea is to look like you actually have eyebrows and not have them draw all the attention to them.
