Satyamev Jayate is an Indian television talk show hosted by famous Bollywood Actor Aamir Khan that covers various sensitive social issues prevalent in India. These social issues include female feticides, child sexual abuse, dowry, medical malpractice, honor killings, domestic violence, pesticide poisoning, alcoholism, untouchability, plight of senior citizens, water crisis, insensitivity towards physically disabled ,plight of senior citizens, child labor, health problems and other issues affecting the country.
Satyamev Jayate is not only being presented to the viewers in Hindi language but is also dubbed in other languages such as Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. This is also one of the main reasons behind the popularity of this show.
The first season of Satyamev Jayate was premiered on 6th May 2012 on STAR India. Uday Shankar is the CEO of STAR India and he suggested Aamir Khan to host Satyamev Jayate. In a very short period of time, the show has attracted masses by giving them a platform to get certain knowledge of these social evils. The concept of Satyamev Jayate was kept quite secretive, it was not revealed until it was aired on 9th May. As all other Indian shows are followed by get-togethers, parties and press conferences,
rong>Satyamev Jayate had no other such thing because it was shot in several states of India including Rajasthan, Kashmir, Kerala, Delhi, Punjab and North India.
Satyamev Jayate got positive reviews from many social organizations, social activists, media houses, doctors, and film and TV personalities. Aamir khan with his team has researched a lot for this show. This could be seen from various facts and figures that he put forward in Satyamev Jayate. Aamir Khan said in one of his interviews that the purpose behind this show is not to bring a change because a TV show cannot bring a change in the country on such a large scale. But its real purpose is to talk to people, understand their problems, brings up the sensitive issue and then presents it in a hard hitting way. Moreover, Satyamev Jayate was also compared to several other TV shows including the Oprah Winfrey Show, Kaun Banga Crorepati and Dus Ka Dam.
The problem with Satyamev Jayate is that its purpose is limited to educating people and creating discussions around them. The whole episode of Satyamev Jayate leaves a heart trenching effect on the viewers and also ends with a song that makes the viewer’s burst into tears. If viewed critically, Satyamev Jayate has no broader implications because it is not taking any measures to find the solutions of these problems, campaign against them or put pressure on the political system of India. The purpose of the show will be fulfilled if appropriate measures are taken to fix these problems.
