They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover. And Fugly is certainly one of those good examples of this adage. The film marks the debut of Mohit Marwah (Anil Kapoor’s newphew), Kiara Advani and Olympic medalist Vijender Singh. It also stars Arfi Lamba, who was also seen in Slumdog Millionaire. Contrary to what the trailers suggest, Fugly is surely not just a youth-centric and friendly drama. This film is quite unusual and at the same time very entertaining, with a thoughtful message that acts like a cherry on a cake. What’s it about: Actor turned director Kabir Sadanand takes us to a journey of Dev (Mohit Marwah), Gaurav (Vijender Singh), Aditya (Arfi Lamba) and Devi (Kiara Advani), who are best of friends. Together they celebrate life and live every moment like there is no tomorrow. All the fun and thrilling activities take a drastic turn when an evil policeman Chautala (Jimmy Shergill) comes into the picture. Gaurav, who is pampered and arrogant son of a Haryanvi politician uses his powers, both physical and political to shut him off. But Chautala is no ordinary policeman. He fears none and follows his own rules. This lands the quartet of protagonists into some major trouble. Their moral values and friendship are put to an unexpected test. Whether they manage to rise above all the mess or give up forms the rest of the story. Yes, we wouldn’t want to reveal much. Watch it to understand it. Word. What’s Hot: Sadanand shows us the shocking reality of the administration system of our nation. And he does it brilliantly. There are numerous social issues like gay-prostitution, excess of television journalism among many others that Sadanand tackles in just 2 hours. Milind Joga’s cinematography compliments it well. The depiction of Delhi and Gurgaon is spot on. And there a lot of moments that stay with you even after you exit the theatre. The ending will shock and move audiences. As far as performances are concerned, it’s undoubtedly Jimmy Shergill who wins the show. The man is completely brilliant in the film. He deserves an award for his performance in the film. Whoever says others must be joking. Mohit Marwah and Kiara Advani are star material. While Vijender Singh is appropriately cast as a Haryanvi. The man provides comic relief in the film, but there is certainly some scope of improvement in him. Music by Yo Yo Honey Singh, Prashant Vadhyar and Raftaar is commendable. However the title track featuring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar (producer of the film) was chopped off from the film, we wonder why…What’s Not: Fugly suffers from mood swings. One minute we see the protagonists tackling with Chautala. The other minute we see Vijender’s character doing a Tom and Jerry type act with income-tax officers, who have come to raid his father’s house. And all of this might disconnect you to the film. The item number performed by Sana Saeed is irrelevant. Also there are many scenes in the film, which remind you of Rang De Basanti. And that’s when one the comparisons begin, which is bad. What to Do: Don’t go by the trailers, there’s a lot more to the film. Especially the young guns of our nation absolutely cannot afford to miss this one.
