High Court Rejects Plea Against ‘3D Sholay’

Ramesh Sippy’s appeal against production and release of his blockbuster film Sholay’s 3D version.

3D Sholay MovieA division bench of the Bombay HC on Tuesday dismissed film director Ramesh Sippy’s appeal against production and release of his blockbuster film Sholay’s 3D version.

Sippy, who directed the film in 1975, had moved the HC earlier this year claiming to be the author and first owner of the copyright of ‘Sholay’, ‘Seeta aur Geeta’, ‘Saagar’, ‘Shaan’ and ‘Andaz’. He said his nephew Shaan Uttamsingh and others were guilty of infringement of copyright and author’s special rights by trying to make a 3D version of Sholay.

He challenged a September 2000 gift deed where Sippy Films Pvt Ltd gave all Sholay rights to his nephews Shaan and Sascha’s company Sholay Media and Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which in turn gave exclusive 3D and 2D theatrical rights to Jayantilal Gada and his firm Pen India Pvt Ltd for Rs 25 crore. -Timofindia
