The long wait for Salman Khan fans is finally over. The superstar will be back on the big screen after a very long year with the Sohail Khan-directed Jai Ho. With this film, Daisy Shah and Bigg Boss 6 contestant Sana Khan will make their Bollywood debut. Touted as one of the biggest releases of 2014, the Salman starrer comes with sky high expectations. Especially after his close friend Aamir Khan Dhoom:3 got the cash registers ringing louder than ever before and smashed box office records, everyone is eager to see if Sallu miyaan will race ahead of his jigri dost in the numbers game.
While SK is certainly a crowd puller, will Jai Ho get a dhamakedaar opening at the ticket windows? Will the bhai of Bollywood earn the tag of ‘new record holder’? “The fact that Jai Ho features Salman Khan is enough to make it one of the most anticipated films in the pipeline. Even though a star can ensure a big draw at the box office over the first weekend, ultimately the film has to be entertaining and engaging enough to sustain after that,” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.
According to boxofficeindia, “Jai Ho is looking at a strong start at the box office all over, but expectations have also changed after the release of Dhoom:3, which managed to set a record opening day on a non holiday, where as earlier a Rs 20 crore nett figure was regarded as excellent for a non holiday. The stakes have gone up after Dhoom:3.” While the Aamir-Katrina Kaif starrer had a golden run at the BO for around three weeks, Jai Ho may find it tough to sustain its momentum since the movie entirely rests on the sturdy shoulders of the Dabangg Khan.
At the same time, we all know Salman is the king of the masses and hence it should be easy for his newest film to earn at least Rs 100 crore. But that’s no longer a big deal, thanks to Dhoom:3 which went on to gross around Rs 351 crore at the domestic BO. So the bigger question is: Will Jai Ho enter the Rs 200 crore club? “The content of Jai Ho will decide if it can go past the Rs 200 cr benchmark,” points out Rathi. We’ll have to wait and see if Jai Ho manages to break Dhoom:3’s box office record. But one thing is for sure – SK never disappoints his fans, so it’s going to be a delight for them to see the superstar back on the silver screen, records be damned, no?
