For its annual Holiday Collector’s Series, LACOSTE commissioned the Campana Brothers to re-imagine its iconic polo.
This is the second time the brand has worked with the duo from Brazil, and the new polos were unveiled at an exclusive VIP soiree during Beijing Design Week on Thursday 27 September 2012. The party was held at the trendy Capital M restaurant overlooking Tiananmen Square, where 500 plus guests including media, designers in town for Beijing Design Week as well as the Chinese capital style influencers gathered to celebrate the collaboration.
The Campana Brothers played with their signature ‘Sushi’ theme for these LACOSTE polos, which feature swirls of colored logos embroidered on the chest. Guests arrived at Capital M to a film clip that captured the crocodiles as they lined up into these special swirls. As guests excited the lift into the party space, there were larger-than-life crocodile swirls printed on both walls and a vertical garden installed to recall the Brazilian tropics that serve as constant inspiration to the Campanas. Models wearing the new polos took the stage and then walked thru the crowd of party goers for private photo ops and up-close-and-personal looks at the vibrant designs. DJ QQ got the party started with some cool lounge tracks, then switched to a funky mix of pop and Brazilian influenced sounds.
Sushi was limited to the polos however, as the Capital M chef conjured up a fresh and fun menu of Brazilian flavors: spicy gazpacho shots; crispy fried cheese puffs; empanadas served with spicy jalapeño sauce; prawn ceviche with lime, chili and coconut; crispy squid fritters with green mango & chilli dip; Boliños de Bacalao with aioli and red salsa. Sweets rounded out the evening with verrines of passion fruit mousse topped with toasted coconut, dulce de leche, and churros con chocolate.
The bar kept busy fueling the party with rounds of Caipirinha (Cachaça, lime and sugar), Batida de Maracujá (Cachaça, Passion Fruit and sugar), Batida de Coco (Cachaça, coconut milk and sugar), Rabo-de-galo (Cachaça and Cynar, the Sao Paolo version) along with M’s Capital Martini (ginger, lychee, vodka). Keeping the French twist alive were chilled coupes of Taittinger Champagne.
In addition to being Unconventional Chic, which is also LACOSTE’s advertising tag line, the Capital M location was chosen because of its proximity to the Dashilar area, where the organizers of Beijing Design Week had invited the Campana Brothers to create a site-specific installation as part of their week’s activities.
