Tell us about your role in Shaandaar.
The film has romance, comedy and fun. Shandaar has one crazy atmosphere where everyone is crazy but nobody wants to show it. Everything is shaandar in this movie. The film is dreamy and fairytale like. I’m like that in real life too. You will see an unusual side of Alia.
How is Vikas Bahl as a director?
Vikas is like a baby on the set. He’s so happy just being a director, being behind the camera, creating moments. His mind is so interesting. You can’t compete with that and that’s why he’s Vikas. Even now he has narrated two-three ideas to me. He thinks out of the box. In Shaandaar too, Vikas has tried to celebrate happiness. He sees goodness in every situation. You have one life, live it well. That’s what he believes in.
How was your working experience with Shahid Kapoor?
I’m very fond of Shahid. I love him dearly. We are very close. He’s talented and a hard working actor. He’s enthusiastic. He’s been here around for 12 years but not once has he made me feel that he’s a senior actor.
You are being offered challenging roles. How do you do justice to them?
If there’s no challenge it gets boring. To wear a bikini in Shaandaar was a challenge as was dancing with Shahid. I’m not an outstanding dancer, I am a decent dancer. Shahid is perfect. So I had to push myself and worked hard to dance with him. I put a lot of effort in the Gulabo song. Udta Punjab is also challenging. I’ve tried pushing the barriers.

How did you find Sanah Kapur in Shaandaar?
She’s fantastic. She’s very good in her first film. Pankaj Kapur sir and Sanah were more like my family than Shahid’s on the set. Pankaj sir cooked for us one day in London when we wanted ghar ka khana. Unhone hum sab ke liye chhole banaye.
You are a successful actress. But are there areas where you still have to improve yourself?
There are lots of things I need to improve upon. In Udta Punjab, I need to speak correct Hindi. I have to push myself there as I’m not very comfortable with the language. Also I tend to behave like a girl. I need to be more graceful. My body language must have more poise. As a dancer I need to get better.
