Marriage is a big milestone in anyone’s life. It is a pre decided notion in almost every society that every adult has to get married and have a family to have a happy and healthy life. But it is not always the case.
Marriage, like any other aspect of life has its pros and cons. The consequences of a marriage change the whole mindset of a person. This has made the concept of cohabitation more popular among a few segments of a society.
Cohabitation does not have those boundaries and limitations like the wedlock. It gives a space to the partners to adjust more than the wedlock. However, this is not the solution to the problems that society faces nowadays. It too, has its limitations and problems and does not promise eternal happiness.
A survey was conducted recently about the pro and cons of the marriage and cohabitation. Here is a brief detail of what people have to say about that.
- Marriage gives more confidence
Marriage is considered to be more secure and safe than the cohabitation. It gives the partners more confidence and more space to socialize in the society. It plays a better part in bringing the partners closer and makes them understand life better.
- Wedlock brings formal advantages
A formal wedlock is more secure and it brings many benefits with it. Dr Kelly Musick, from the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University in New York, says, “While married couples experience health gains – likely linked to the formal benefits of marriage such as shared healthcare plans, cohabiting couples experienced greater gains in happiness and self-esteem. For some, cohabitation may come with fewer unwanted obligations than marriage and allow for more flexibility, autonomy, and personal growth.”
- Wedded couples are more content
Although cohabitated couples tend to be more secure and happy, but the wedded couples have more discipline and contented in their lives. They are more likely to share activities, have shared responsibilities, they socialize together, have common friends and they make up a good family life. They tend to share their lives in a better way than the cohabitated couples.
- Cohabitation gives a direction to life
Although getting a married life is definitely a pro in life. It brings a lot of health and happiness with it, however, cohabitation gives more space to adjust and see how things work out. It allows the partners to develop personally and make things sort out in a better way. They have a freedom of mind that if things don’t get in place; they can always get out of the relationship happily and part ways.
- Mixed opinions
There are mixed opinions in the general society about the concept of wedlock and cohabitation. It varies from person to person. A major segment of the society thinks that the marriage is not the bed of roses but is a better option than the cohabitation. It gives a better direction to your life and a better position in the society.
However, the other percentage is of the view that cohabitation gives you the freedom to lead the life your own way while enjoying the pros of being in a relationship. They think that cohabitation is the easy way out. This is making it more popular among the young lot these days.
